Intermarché–Wanty’s Tour 2025 Tactics: Breakaway Science & Sprint Sniping

OG Title: How Intermarché–Wanty Will Light the Tour de France Fuse

OG Description: From long-range attacks to sprint chaos, here’s their playbook

If you think Intermarché–Wanty is showing up just to fill numbers — you haven’t been watching these guys race. They thrive on unpredictability, weaponize chaos, and turn mid-race dull moments into absolute mayhem. Here’s how they’ll unleash havoc in July:

Breakaway Chaos Merchants

Intermarché–Wanty is one of the most aggressive breakaway teams in the WorldTour — and this Tour will be no different. Expect Zimmermann, Barré, Rutsch, and Braet to jump into early moves on medium and mountain stages.

  • Objective: Snap up stage wins when the GC teams hesitate.
  • Bonus: Score TV time for sponsors and pressure GC teams into chasing.

Key Stages to Target:

Stages 6, 9, 14, 17, and 19 — classic breakaway playgrounds.

Sprint Strike Plan: Biniam Girmay’s Green Dream

Make no mistake — Biniam Girmay isn’t just here to win a stage; he’s chasing multiple sprint finishes and an outside shot at the green jersey. The sprint train will revolve around Rex, Braet, Page, and Roel Van Sintmaartensdijk as his loyal protectors.

Sprint Setup:

  • Rex & Braet: Control positioning from 10km to 3km.
  • Roel Van Sintmaartensdijk: Lead-out man inside the final km.
  • Girmay: Drop the hammer with 150m to go

Target Sprint Stages: 3, 5, 7, 10, 13, and 21 (Champs-Élysées).

Climbing Raids & Opportunistic Mountain Gambits

Georg Zimmermann will be the key mountain weapon — targeting long, grippy climbs where a well-timed break can hold off the GC train. He’s not a pure GC threat, which means he’ll get leash to fly.

Mountain Support:

Jonas Rutsch as the domestique — setting pace in the early slopes and guiding Zimmermann into breaks.

Polka Dot Sneak Attack:

If Zimmermann bags a mountain stage early, they’ll double down and hunt mountain points.

Crosswind & Echelon Tactics

This squad LOVES chaos — and few teams are better when the wind starts to tear the peloton apart.

Key Enforcers:

Laurenz Rex, Vito Braet, and Louis Barré will split the race on wind-prone transitional stages (Stages 4, 11, and 16)

Game Plan

Put rivals on the back foot, isolate sprint favorites, and set Girmay up for small group sprints.

Tactical Flexibility & Opportunism

Intermarché–Wanty doesn’t stick to one blueprint. They pivot in real-time:

  • Sprint train in full force? Back Girmay.
  • Breakaway up the road? Load it with Zimmermann or Barré.
  • Chaos in crosswinds? Rex takes the reigns.

They’ll thrive in the Tour’s trickier, transitional stages where tactics, not watts alone, win.
